Framer

A Framer website for your brand, work or campaign

Framer is a platform for designing and publishing a website. It suits sites where imagery and design carry the story, with a CMS for the content you manage yourself. We will tell you straight away what Framer does not do on its own.

Framer is strong where design does the work

This page is for anyone who wants a site where the brand, the work or a campaign takes centre stage: a studio, a brand with a clear visual language, a portfolio, a launch. The challenge is rarely the technology, but a site that looked good in the design and no longer does after development.

In Framer, we design and publish in the same environment. What you manage yourself afterwards, such as projects, articles or vacancies, goes into the CMS.

What Framer’s CMS can do

Enough for most brand and portfolio sites, within the limits of the subscription.

Collections and detail pages

A collection is a list of similar items, such as projects, with fields for text, imagery, date and references. Each item has its own page, and lists can be filtered and sorted.

Translation

Framer has built-in translation, so the same site can appear in more languages.

External content

The CMS can synchronise with Google Sheets and Airtable, and you can import a CSV file. With the Server API, an external script can update and publish the project; this is an entry point for management, not code that runs for visitors.

Limits per subscription

Each subscription has a limit on the number of pages, collections and CMS items. We set these out in the proposal alongside what your site needs, now and in a few years.

What Framer does not do on its own

If you need one of these functions, a second system is added. This is then included in the proposal, together with its costs.

Server-side logic for visitors

Framer does not run its own code on a server when a visitor does something. Code components run in the browser. A calculation involving data that must remain private, or a form that changes something in your own systems, therefore requires a separate service or a bespoke web app.

Customer accounts and portals

Individual user logins are not built into Framer itself. They are possible through third-party plug-ins or components; we build a genuine customer portal with its own data per customer as a separate web app.

An online shop of your own

Framer has no shop of its own. Third-party plug-ins can connect a Shopify shop to the site; checkout, stock and orders then remain in Shopify. These plug-ins have their own costs and terms, and we name them in the proposal.

Three sites that are well suited to Framer

Possible applications, not completed commissions.

A portfolio you can update yourself

Problem

New work only goes online months later because every project page has to be laid out by hand.

Solution

A Projects collection with set fields for imagery, brief, role and year. A new project is a new item; the page and its place in the overview follow automatically.

Data involved

Projects, imagery, categories and, where needed, references to services.

Value

New work goes online in the same format as the rest, without needing a designer.

Depends on

How many projects and images there are, and whether that stays within the subscription limit.

Campaign landing pages in two languages

Problem

Every campaign is urgent, and the page is rebuilt each time, separately in Dutch and English.

Solution

A set of fixed sections for assembling a new landing page quickly, with built-in translation for the second language.

Data involved

Copy in each language, imagery and the sign-up form fields.

Value

Each new campaign page fits the brand, and its translation belongs to the same page.

Depends on

Where sign-ups need to go, because a form that sends data into your own systems needs an integration outside Framer.

A brand site with a small shop

Problem

The brand comes first, but a few products also need to be sold.

Solution

A Framer site for the brand, connected to a Shopify shop through a third-party plug-in. Checkout, stock and orders run through Shopify.

Data involved

Products and stock in Shopify; brand story and imagery in Framer.

Value

The site preserves the brand’s form, while sales run through a platform built for that purpose.

Depends on

Which plug-in is used, what it costs, and whether the range remains small enough to manage this way.

Framer is a very good fit for some sites, but not for others

This is a good fit when

  • Your site is about your brand, imagery or work

  • You manage a clear, limited amount of content yourself in a CMS

  • You want to be able to compose landing pages quickly

  • Your site does not need to process data per visitor

This is less suitable when

  • You need a customer portal or individual user logins

  • The shop is the main focus, not a supporting part

  • Your site needs to run calculations or actions on a server

  • You expect more content than the subscription limits allow

If Framer is not a fit, we look at WordPress or Webflow for a site with a large amount of content, Shopify when the shop takes centre stage, or a bespoke app alongside the site.

From design to a site you manage yourself

  1. Content and limits. Which pages, which collections, how many items and which languages, checked against the subscription.

  2. Design in Framer. We design directly in Framer, so what you see is also the site, on phone and computer.

  3. CMS and components. Collections with fixed fields and sections you can reuse.

  4. A second system, when needed. A connected shop, a form service or a web app, with a description of where each piece of data is stored.

  5. Checks and handover. Reviewing screen sizes, keyboard access and speed, and explaining the CMS. The site goes live on your own domain.

What we need for a proposal

With Framer, the proposal centres on your content and what the site needs to do.

  • What the site needs to show, and to whom

  • Which content you will manage yourself, and roughly how much

  • Whether more languages will be added

  • Whether anything needs to be sold, logged into or calculated

  • Imagery and copy that are already available

  • Only during development: access to the Framer project through your own account, which you add, not through your password

What a Framer site costs, and what may be added

Amounts are set out in the proposal. These factors determine them.

  • Design. The number of page types and sections with their own design.

  • CMS. The number of collections and fields, and how much content needs to be migrated.

  • Languages. Whether translation is needed, and by whom.

  • Second system. A connected shop, third-party login or a bespoke web app.

Recurring costs

  • The Framer subscription, suited to the number of pages and CMS items

  • Domain

  • Third-party plug-ins or services, such as a connected shop

  • Maintenance and changes as agreed

Questions about Framer

Can I edit my own copy and projects?

Yes. You can edit what is in the CMS yourself. We agree which parts of the pages you will edit outside the CMS and explain them during handover.

What if I need a customer portal or login later?

Then a second system is added alongside the site, such as a login service or a bespoke web app. The Framer site does not need to be replaced.

Can I sell through my Framer site?

Through a third-party plug-in that connects a Shopify shop. Checkout and orders then go through Shopify. This works for a small range; if the shop is the main focus, an online shop platform is more appropriate.
